June Field Day: Smokva Community Garden

Time & Location

Sunday 18 May, 10:00 am – 2:00 pm Wickham NSW

About the Event Smokva’s community garden is a diverse group of Newcastle’s inner west residents working together in a beautiful community garden to provide social opportunities, education and to grow and distribute healthy food on a neighbourhood scale.

The current group has been there 3 years. It was dormant for 5 years and started about 17 years ago. The 1000sq. m property was a well-known established garden that was not receiving any attention. Covered in couch grass with crumbling, dry raised beds. Our devoted group has transformed the garden into a beautiful thriving urban space.

Today we've built a strong community and made a space that we are happy to meet and hang out in. We have improved the soil and eradicated a lot of weed species.

We make compost every week and we use home-made bokashi to pre-ferment the scraps. We do not have allocated beds, everyone helps, and anyone can take produce, including many families who come to visit the playground and chickens.
